Co-designing Access in a Small Art Gallery for Blind Visitors

This video recording from the Ontario Museum Association Annual Conference 2022 features:

  • Carla Ayukawa, Exhibition and Industrial Designer, Educator, Carleton University
  • Fiona Wright, Student and Public Programs Coordinator, Carleton University Art Gallery
  • James Bluhm, Community Consultant, Carleton University Art Gallery

Even with a smaller staff and defined budget, producing accessibility resources for cultural institutions requires community consultation – and it can be done! In this case study, Carla Ayukawa, Fiona Wright and James Bluhm discuss an audio description tour, developed with and for gallery visitors who are blind or who have vision impairments. In an exhibition that explored different kinds of perceptibility, this tour opened up spaces for multi-sensory engagements and shared social experiences.
