Doug Friesen suggests a mobile recording device and mic for the recording of of sound marks, soundscapes, and the sounds of objects. However, a more stationary setup (computer, converter, and mic) can improve sound isolation and quality.

Mobile Recording

Handheld recorders (two inputs / stereo preferable)

  • Most have built-in microphones, but can also handle external microphones

Microphones (pencil condenser / shotgun mic), Windscreen, Shock Mount, Gun Mount, Cable

Stationary Recording

Audio converter interface

  • Basic USB microphones can do this automatically, but something like a Scarlett or M-Audio can provide more options

Condenser Microphone, Stand, Shock mount, Cable
